CITY OF GOD: The streets of the world's most notorious slum, Rio de Janeiro's "City of God," are a place where combat photographers fear to tread, police rarely go and residents are lucky if they live to the age of 20. In the midst of the oppressive crime and violence, a frail and scared young boy will grow up to discover that he can view the harsh realities of his surroundings with a different eye: the eye of an artist. In the face of impossible odds, his brave ambition to become a professional photographer becomes a window into his world and, ultimately, his way out. CITY OF MEN: Growing up in a culture dictated by violence and run by street gangs, teenagers Acerola (Douglas Silva) and Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha) have become close as brothers. With their eighteenth birthdays fast approaching, Laranjinha sets out to find the father he never met, while Acerola struggles to raise his own young son. But when they suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of a gang war, the lifelong friends are forced to confront a shocking secret from their shared past.

Loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996, Of Gods and Men tells a story of eight French Christian monks who live in harmony with their Muslim brothers. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps through the region. The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse. Should they leave? Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay... come what may.
The monks at the Trappist monastery in Algeria seem almost to exist outside of time, so it may be a while before we recognize the 1990s as the setting for Of Gods and Men. And old traditions cannot escape new warfare in this stirring movie, based on a true story that happened at a remote enclave of peaceful, studious priests. These Christian monks minister to the largely Muslim (and very poor) villagers in their vicinity, a balance that is threatened by Algeria's Civil War. When nearby radical-Islamist insurgents begin killing foreigners, the monks must face a choice. Will they flee to safety--a perfectly rational and understandable decision that will leave the villagers without their only source of health care--or will they stay on, secure in their spiritual calling despite the possibility of abduction or murder? Director Xavier Beauvois makes an absorbing film from this question, and it's not at all difficult to understand why it became an unexpected box-office smash in France (and ended up winning the Cesar award for best film of 2010). The film is beautifully cast, and sometimes Beauvois simply trains his camera on the lined, weathered faces of his priests, as though allowing those lines to tell the story. Heading the cast is Lambert Wilson (of Matrix fame), who leads his men with an almost regal bearing, and veteran actor Michael Lonsdale, who quietly inhabits the role of the physician in the group. The film takes time out for quiet contemplation, as though understanding that the priests' suspenseful situation is only half the story. The wordless climax, which allows the men to be animated by the earthly pleasures of wine and Tchaikovsky, is something of a spiritual journey of acceptance all on its own. It's a moment you'll find very difficult to forget. --Robert Horton

Mind of the Married Man, The: Complete First Season (DVD)

Can married men survive in modern times? Today, there are more responsibilities. Obligations. Temptations. At the dawn of the 21st Century, it's getting harder and harder for men to stay happy and stay married. So why do we even try? HBO presents an all-new comedy series that shows what really goes on inside, The Mind of the Married Man.

]]>
Often (misleadingly) compared to Sex and the City, The Mind of the Married Man is more like a buttoned-down Curb Your Enthusiasm or saltier Everybody Loves Raymond. Created by Mike Binder (The Upside of Anger), the HBO comedy revolves around Chicago reporter Micky (Binder), wife Donna (Sonya Walger, C.S.I.: NY), and fellow ink-stained wretches Jake (Jake Weber, Medium) and Doug (Taylor Nichols, Metropolitan). Unlike the glamorous Carrie Bradshaw, Micky's just a regular guy with a pretty decent life, but he often feels as if something's missing.

Things get off to a shaky start in the pilot when Donna finds pornography on his computer. Then he hires the impossibly leggy Missy (Ivana Milicevic, Love Actually), because he finds her attractive. He fires her for the same reason--she had become distracting--then has to rehire her, because she hadn't done anything wrong. (M. Emmet Walsh plays his droll boss, Randall.) Mickey is nothing like the adulterous Jake, but as the theme song puts it, "The neighbor's grass may seem much greener than the grass right here at home." So then Jake introduces him to sensual massage ("The God of Marriage"), which starts out innocently enough--although he neglects to tell Donna about his new "hobby." By the end of the season, Missy will have moved on, but the situation with the masseuse (Michelle Krusiec, Saving Face) will have crossed a line, leaving Micky's marriage more precarious than ever.

Aside from Binder, directors include Danny Leiner (Dude, Where's My Car?), Nancy Savoca (Household Saints), Bob Saget (The Aristocrats), and Bruce Paltrow (St. Elsewhere). Recurring characters include Larry Miller (Mad About You) as host of the TV show on which Micky regularly appears and Kathryn Morris (Cold Case) as a fellow guest. (Interestingly, Binder and Morris both appeared in Minority Report.) --Kathleen C. Fennessy

From Down Under come a pleasant-enough comedy that strives to take on some heavy topics - most notably the existence (or lack thereof) of God. Scottish comedian/singer Billy Connolly is a lawyer-turned-fisherman who decides to sue God after a bolt of ligh
The Man Who Sued God defies simple definition, managing to be several types of movie all at the same time. As a theological-romantic-comedy-drama, it's in a somewhat unique category all of its own. Perhaps only Billy Connolly could carry off a central role that combines slapstick with raging anger, puppydog disappointment, and strong language delivered in his distinctive accent. These facets of performance are used and abused in a tale that feels like it really ought to be based on a true story, but isn't.

Connolly's life as a fisherman is sunk by the destruction of his boat by a bolt of lightning. The insurance company won't pay up, because it falls under that age-old excuse of being an "act of God". So Connolly decides to sue the deity. The premise raises issues about how the law and the church have apparently conspired together. But at heart the film is a simple character study, so any pondering on legal or theological implications will have to be done on your own time; the screen is occupied with family issues, underhand dealings, and a maybe-maybe romance with Judy Davis. --Paul Tonks
