Hosted by Morgan Freeman, Through the Wormhole will explore the deepest mysteries of existence - the questions that have puzzled mankind for eternity (Who-or what-am I? Are we alone? How did this begin? What happened before that?). This series will bring together the brightest minds and best ideas fromthe very edges of Science--Astrophysics, Astrobiology, Quantum Mechanics, String Theory, and more - to reveal the extraordinary truth of our Universe.

1 What Happened Before the Beginning?
Long: Every cosmologist and astronomer agrees: our Universe is 13.7 billion years old. Using cutting-edge technology, scientists are now able to take a
snapshot of the Universe a mere heartbeat after its birth. Armed with hypersensitive satellites, astronomers look back in time to the very moment
of creation, when all the matter in the Universe exploded into existence. It is here that we uncover an unsolved mystery as old as time itself --
if the Universe was born, where did it come from? Meet the leading scientists who have now discovered what they believe to be the origin of our
Universe, and a window into the time before time.

2 Are We Alone?
Long: Aliens almost certainly do exist. So why haven't we yet met E.T.? It turns out we're only just developing instruments powerful enough to scan for
them, and science sophisticated enough to know where to look. As a result, race is on to find the first intelligent aliens. But what would they
look like, and how would they interact with us if we met? The answers may come to us sooner than we imagine, for one leading astronomer
believes she may already have heard a hint of their first efforts to communicate.

3 Is Time Travel Possible?
Long: Einstein's world-shaking Theory of Relativity says that time travel is perfectly possible -- if you're going forward in time. Finding a way to
travel backwards requires breaking the speed of light, which so far seems impossible. But now, strange-but-true phenomena such as quantum
nonlocality (where particles instantly teleport across vast distances) may give us a way to make the dream of traveling back and forth through time
a reality. Step into a time machine and rewrite history, bring loved ones back to life, control our destinies. But if succeed, what are the
consequences of such freedom? Will we get trapped in a plethora of paradoxes and multiple universes that will destroy the fabric of the universe?

4 How Did We Get Here?
Long: Everywhere we look in the most hospitable of environments and in the most extreme we find life. On Earth, life exists everywhere we look. Yet we
have only ever found life on our planet. How did the stuff of stars come together to create life as we know it? What do we really mean by 'life'?
And will unlocking this mystery help us find life elsewhere?

5 What Are We Really Made Of?
Long: What is the universe made of? If you answered stars, planets, gas and dust, you'd be dead wrong. Thirty years ago, scientists first realized that
some unknown dark substance was affecting the way galaxies moved. Today, they think there must be five times Our understanding of the universe and the nature of reality itself has drastically changed over the last 100 years - and it's on the verge of another seismic shift. In a 17-mile-long tunnel buried 570 feet beneath the Franco-Swiss border, the world's largest and most powerful atom smasher, the Large Hadron Collider, is powering up. Its goal is nothing less than recreating the first instants of creation, when the universe was unimaginably hot and long-extinct forms of matter sizzled and cooled into stars, planets, and ultimately, us. These incredibly small and exotic particles hold the keys to the greatest mysteries of the universe. What we find could validate our long-held theories about how the world works and wh
There are a lot of questions asked (and answered, sometimes surprisingly so) in the course of the eight episodes that make up the first season of Through the Wormhole, a science documentary hosted by actor Morgan Freeman. Not just any questions--big questions, cosmic questions, the kind that humans have been asking since the dawn of time. For instance: Can science somehow prove the existence of the Creator? (Could be. One scientist suggests that what people claim are visions of and visitations from God are in fact the result of stimulation of the brain's right temporal lobe, and he invented a "God helmet" to prove it.) Is time travel possible? (Sure. All we have to do is figure out how to make a machine that goes as fast as the speed of light.) What happened before the Big Bang, when the universe was created? (That one's a little tough to explain in a sentence or two.) Are we truly alone, or is there other life somewhere out there? (Many among the astrobiologists who spend a lot of time studying such things are convinced that the universe--or universes, as there may be many more than one--is so incomprehensibly vast that there must be.) These and other topics make for fascinating viewing. To be sure, those who aren't especially scientifically or mathematically inclined may find some of it to be tough sledding; explanations of how gravity might combine with electromagnetism and the so-called weak and strong forces to form a single, unifying force, how "quantum nonlocality" (in which particles are instantly teleported across vast distances) works, or what "retro-causality" means are complex, to say the least. But while the approach is serious and very detailed, it's also entertaining, with lots of visual interest (by way of animation, film clips, visual effects, and such) and often rather amusing (scientists rendered to look like aliens, a fellow who uses a glass of red wine to illustrate his point), and Freeman makes an excellent guide. And with the second season of the series having already aired, fans already have a lot more to look forward to. --Sam Graham

What happens when we die - do we simply cease to exist or do we survive in some form? It's the greatest mystery of science. Now, biologists, physicists and philosophers are closing in on finding the answer to the ultimate question.

Space seems like it goes on forever - but does it? Surprising new evidence suggests that not only is there a place where the universe ends - but there is something unimaginable lurking beyond it.

Time is not what we think it is. New research questions the nature of time and challenges our most basic perceptions about reality.

New evidence forces us to consider a truly shocking possibility - is our reality an illusion?

New research is discovering that thoughts can fly across space and that we all may be part of a global consciousness. Scientifically, a sixth sense is entirely possible.

There could be more than one version of reality - and more than one you. As scientists unravel this possibility, a new astounding one emerges: these parallel worlds could determine the destiny of the entire universe.

A revolution in science is underway that will transform life on Earth and ensure our survival as a species. If we can solve the equation of everything, it will present the keys to creation itself.

Physicists are designing warp drives, learning how to pry open wormholes, and finding cracks in the fabric of the cosmos to bring the final frontier within our grasp.

Death is a humbling reality - but what if life had no end? Cutting-edge science embarks on a bold mission to extend human life and may soon bring immortality within our grasp.

Across the galaxy lie exotic worlds made entirely of water or stewing with poisonous gas. What kinds of creatures thrive in these places? Would they resemble beings on Earth, or could life take on new and unexpected forms?
Host-narrator Morgan Freeman is back with a second season of Through the Wormhole, the series that uses science to ponder and perhaps answer some of the immense questions that have intrigued and vexed humankind since time immemorial. The first time around, those questions involved proving the existence of God, the possibility of time travel, the presence of life elsewhere in the universe, and other mind-boggling matters, and they are no less weighty this time. In the first of the 10 episodes, "Is There Life After Death?," some experts argue that the soul dies with the body, while others posit the theory that rather than just a bunch of neurons, it's part of the fabric of the universe, "a quantum computer hard-wired into the cosmos," and thus it does exist after we die (one scientist even attempts to "build" a soul to prove it). "Is There an Edge to the Universe?" finds a cosmologist, a theoretician, and others contending that counter to most accepted notions, the universe is not infinite, that it might be shaped like a dodecahedron (i.e., a soccer ball), and that another universe exists beyond the one we know. "Is There a Sixth Sense?" examines such phenomena as "blind sight" (a "subconscious sensory system" that allows sightless people to "see" emotions in others) and a "global mind" or "cosmic consciousness" that may enable us to respond to events before they even occur (the 9/11 terrorist attacks are used to illustrate that possibility). And "Can We Travel Faster than Light?" studies the practical feasibility of warp drives, wormholes, and other marvels familiar to sci-fi fans.

As before, these and other topics (including contemplations of eternal life, what aliens look like, and the possibility that there are more than three dimensions) involve some very complex scientific experiments and dizzying mathematics. But there's also a healthy dose of whimsy (one scientist uses the video game Asteroids and a bagel to illustrate her theories) and plenty of graphics, models, and outstanding visual effects, plus amusing cartoon animation and Freeman's personal touch via several reenactments of his own childhood experiences. All in all, this beautifully produced series is at once provocative, edifying, and entertaining. --Sam Graham

Hugh Grant and Sara Jessica Parker star in this delightful comedy about finding love in the most unexpected places. Two successful New Yorkers, Paul (Grant) and Meryl (Parker), are at their wits end with repairing their strained marriage. But when they become the only witnesses to a brutal murder, the police hide them away in Wyoming together. Now these die-hard city dwellers will have to survive the weather, bears, fresh air, and forced time with one another if they want to make it out alive.
Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker play an estranged husband and wife, both die-hard New Yorkers; while trying to patch things up, they witness a murder and have to go into witness protection in backwater Wyoming. Encounters with bears, bingo, and rodeo clowns ensue. The fish-out-of-water formula is not particularly inspired, but Grant and Parker are well matched; they're both pros who establish an immediate rapport and comfort with each other, making them persuasive as a married couple who haven't fallen out of love. On top of that, the supporting cast is top-notch: Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) as Parker's snippy assistant, Sam Elliott (Thank You for Smoking) as the Wyoming marshal assigned to protect the neurotic couple, and Mary Steenburgen (Melvin and Howard) as the marshal's tough-as-nails wife are only the most recognizable of the solid ensemble playing the quirky characters surrounding the feuding romantic leads. Writer-director Marc Lawrence previously directed Grant to stronger effect in Music & Lyrics and, in particular, Two Weeks Notice, in which Grant and Sandra Bullock proved surprisingly sparky. --Bret Fetzer

The Helen Morgan Story, a musical bio of the great 1920s torch singer, begins with a scene of flappers and jazz babies spontaneously dancing on a train. If you can buy into that kind of crazy history, you might just enjoy this tuneful 1957 drama, the rise-fall-comeback of a tragic showbiz figure (which neglects to include the tragic final act). Ann Blyth, who'd garnered an Oscar nomination for playing Joan Crawford's ingrate daughter in 1945's Mildred Pierce, is Helen Morgan, the Prohibition songstress for whom perching atop a piano became a signature pose. We watch Morgan's early successes crooning in speakeasies, and her wrong moves in her personal life; seems the lady just can't help lovin' a no-good gangster, played by Paul Newman (still very early in his career). Newman's character keeps showing up, like a bad penny, even after Helen is taken up by a wealthy (and married) lawyer, played by Richard Carlson. The many heartbreaks eventually lead to alcohol addiction, which killed the real Morgan in 1941, although the film stops short of her unfortunate ending. Morgan's success in the original production of Show Boat goes by quickly, but the movie includes a decent roster of songs from various stages of her career. Michael Curtiz directed, and his dark eye (and Ted Tetzlaff's widescreen black-and-white cinematography) gives the movie a pleasing film-noir overlay. The biggest problem is Blyth, too small for the role and finally defeated by the simplistic diagnosis of Morgan's problems. Blyth's singing voice was dubbed by Gogi Grant, who has a strong voice that doesn't especially sound like Morgan's. --Robert Horton
